Meet the 2016 Lakeside Leadership Academy Advancement/Communications Interns: Alexis Oatman, Josh Hilgenberg and Kaitlyn Kline:
How did you hear about Lakeside? I heard about it at a Job Fair from a friend.
What are you most looking forward to this summer at Lakeside? I’m looking forward to making some friends, making professional connections and having a good time.
What do you hope to gain from this experience? More team building and leadership experience, along with some event planning experience.
Name one goal you hope to achieve this summer? I’d like to get in better shape.
What are some of your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Some of my hobbies include reading and watching TV/movies. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends and relaxing.
What is one of your proudest moments you have achieved thus far in life? The proudest moment so far in my life is graduating from high school.
What is your dream job? My dream job is to do editorial journalism in New York.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. My uncle is a playwright.
How did you hear about Lakeside? The first time I came to Lakeside was in between high school and college on a choir tour, and the visit only lasted a few hours. It seemed cool from the few things I saw, and the people who showed up at our concert were great. Almost a year later I heard about the internship from a fraternity advisor in the spring of 2015, and it sounded like it would be fun, so I applied and ended up getting the position. I had a great time, met some new friends, and learned a lot so I couldn’t resist coming back this year.
What are you most looking forward to this summer at Lakeside? I love food. The fact that I get to cook for myself is so exciting and fun to me, which is why I’m most looking forward to the Farmers’ Market. I could spend a whole paycheck on just peaches and be happy. I’m sure you’ll see me with an armful of them if you stop by the market during the summer.
What do you hope to gain from this experience? Last summer I feel like I learned a lot about my writing style, which was great. This time around, I’d really like to hone in on that and work towards becoming confident in it as well as being able to revise my work accordingly. I’ve started to learn lately that to put out the best work you can, you have to be willing to accept that it won’t be perfect the first time.
Name one goal you hope to achieve this summer? I really want to learn how to ride a bike. I’ve been putting it off and telling myself I’d learn forever, but I’m set on figuring it out now! I was pretty stubborn as a kid, so when I couldn’t figure out how to ride a bike I just sort of gave up and decided I would rollerblade instead. I thought it was the cool thing to do when I was little, but I wish I kept trying. At least now it’s a fun conversation starter!
What are some of your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Some of my hobbies include reading and collecting comic books, writing, playing video games, rollerblading and cooking. I don’t get a lot of time to read for fun during the school year, so a lot of my free time will probably be spent with a book in my hand. I also like to write poetry and short stories. Like I said earlier though, I love food, so I’m sure I’ll be cooking new recipes and trying to eat as many new restaurants as I can – and going back to some Lakeside favorites for donuts, chicken salad, coffee and ice cream.
What is one of your proudest moments you have achieved thus far in life? Last semester I did an internship with Habitat for Humanity near Heidelberg which was awesome. It dealt a lot with grant writing and trying to build up funds for home builds and day-to-day operations for the office itself. I’m proud of it because I know the work I was doing will have a direct impact on the people in the community and help them find their way.
What is your dream job? My dream job is to be an author of something. I’m not sure what yet, but I love writing creatively and telling stories in unique ways. Writing is one of the few things that lives on past a person’s life and can impact an endless network of people, in all different ways. That’s always interested me and being a part of that community would be totally fulfilling. Getting paid for it would be pretty cool too.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I learned a lot of what I know about cooking from watching Bobby Flay, Michael Symon and Alton Brown on the Food Network and Cooking Channel. In high school I’d sit in front of the TV for hours and watch anything on either of those channels just to learn something new. Even though my mom tried to teach me when I was a little younger, it didn’t seem cool until I saw it on TV – it’s a similar situation with riding a bike.
How did you hear about Lakeside? Lakeside has been a place for my family to rest during the summers for generations. My grandparents met here, my dad spent his summers here growing up, and my family and I have come to Lakeside for brief summer vacations since I was young. The community at Lakeside has always provided our family with a place to rest and I appreciate that.
What are you most looking forward to this summer at Lakeside? I am excited for the opportunities to get further involved at Lakeside. The educational lectures, Hoover shows and religious events this summer intrigue me. I am also anxious for the farmers’ market! I love fresh, locally grown foods and to have that available to me this summer will be wonderful!
What do you hope to gain from this experience? From this experience I hope to gain skills, knowledge and practice in my areas of study that will equip me as I continue at Calvin and search for other opportunities with non-for-profits in the future.
Name one goal you hope to achieve this summer? This summer I hope to build a portfolio that includes a variety of examples of items I worked on for the Advancements and Communications department.
What are some of your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Some of my hobbies include swing dancing, drawing and traveling. In my free time I enjoy sitting my hammock with either a historical fiction novel or a research piece on current events in different countries around the world. I also enjoy adventures with friends that end in finding new places and building good memories.
What is one of your proudest moments you have achieved thus far in life? God has blessed me in many ways, especially this past year. One of those ways will actually have me busy this summer on top of this internship at Lakeside! I will be designing, organizing and implementing the Faith and International Development Conference for this upcoming year.
What is your dream job? My dream job would be to do advancements, event planning and intercultural communications for a non-governmental organization. I love traveling, working with people and investing into the futures of others, so as long as I have the opportunity to do those things, I will be glad.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I love east coast swing dance. In Grand Rapids-my college town-there was swing dance downtown in the park or public museum every Tuesday night and as long as we did not have too much to do, my friends and I would go.
